Environmental Responsibility

MINING-TECHNICAL AND BIOLOGICAL RECLAMATION

Mining of minerals is a complex and multi-stage process that involves a range of technical, environmental, economic, and social aspects. The entire extraction process is associated with significant environmental challenges; therefore, at each stage, it is necessary to employ technologies and methods aimed at minimizing the negative impact on the environment and natural resources.

Before the start of extraction, in order to determine the locations of useful deposits, the ME 'Volynpryrodresurs' conducts a comprehensive geological survey: a geological-economic assessment of the area with the preparation of detailed geological-resource maps and an evaluation of amber and peat reserves. Next, plans are developed and optimal technologies for mineral exploitation are implemented, which may include the use of heavy machinery, drilling, and other processes.

After the extraction is completed, it is important to carry out the recultivation process. Mining-technical and biological recultivation are necessary for worked-out territories.

The first step is to carry out mining-technical reclamation: the layers of soil are returned in the order of their original deposition, compacted, and restored to the state that existed before the start of extraction operations. Soon after this, the worked-out areas (with completed mining-technical reclamation) are transferred to forestry for biological reclamation, namely – tree planting. The forestry develops a plan for biological reclamation, including a planting plan and steps, selection of species, and root systems, etc. Thus, after the completion of extraction operations, the entire area is mechanically planted.

Objectives and Key Aspects of Land Restoration

Soil Cover Restoration

This process facilitates the restoration of soil structure, which is crucial for ensuring the stability of natural ecosystems. Soil layers are returned in the order of their original deposition.

Vegetation Restoration

Forest planting within reclamation programs promotes the restoration of natural vegetation cover, serving as an exemplary model of biological reclamation.

Ecosystem Stabilization

Maintaining stability is a critical factor to enable the ecosystem to function effectively and withstand external impacts, ensuring its rapid recovery.

First Reclaimed Site

ME “Volynpryrodresurs” has transferred the first reclaimed area to the Manevytske State Forestry. This is the first area that was included in the register of disturbed territories designated for forestry, which the enterprise took into development. The forest mass of this territory was completely destroyed, and the area itself was dug up by illegal miners – it represented a territory covered with dead wood and fallen trees as a result of the activities of illegal miners.

After the completion of operations on this site, full mining-technical reclamation was carried out, with soil layers restored to their original order. Biological reclamation was also conducted through forest planting.
